A Crucial Collaboration for Rescue Operations in Quebec since 2022
Since June 2022, Helico Secours, a solidarity co-operative, has exclusively operated RECCO technology by helicopter during rescue operations in Quebec. This new collaboration strengthens rescue coverage in Quebec and Eastern Canada. Alain Vallières, their general director, emphasizes that during rescue operations, the location of individuals is often the main difficulty, and every minute counts in these crucial situations. The ability to quickly locate missing persons in case of emergency is often decisive.

What is the RECCO® system?
The RECCO® reflector integrated into your clothing or equipment allows you to be spotted by air rescue teams. RECCO reflectors are passive transponders, with no need for batteries or activation, guaranteeing indefinite operation.
How does the RECCO® system work?
The RECCO detector emits a directional radar signal, similar to the projection of a flashlight.
When the radar signal reaches the reflector, it is sent back to the RECCO detector, providing rescuers with the direction of the victim.
As the detector gets closer to the reflector, the intensity of the signal sent back increases, thus facilitating the location of the victim by the rescuers.

The RECCO technology was developed in the 1980s by Magnus Granhed in Sweden. The inspiration behind this innovation came after Magnus witnessed an avalanche in the 70s. He then realized that many people were lost or in danger in the mountains, and he felt the need to create a more efficient search and rescue system. Seeing the pressing need to develop an avalanche rescue technology, he designed the RECCO system which uses radar waves to detect passive reflectors integrated into outdoor gear. This has led to a revolutionary innovation that improves the safety of outdoor enthusiasts around the world. Vital Signs for Safety in the Wild
The partnership between Recco and Chlorophylle has been ongoing for several years. However, it is essential to note that since the onset of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, our fellow citizens have enthusiastically rediscovered the forests of our beautiful region. They are venturing further and further into them, but often without the necessary knowledge, as Thierry Gaudron, vice president of Sauvetage 02 and head of operations and training, explained.
The Arrival of a Much-Awaited Technology
Mr. Gaudron, who is also the lead instructor, led the training of a team of 10 volunteers capable of participating in air search operations aboard an Helico Secours aircraft, the first cooperative specializing in air and heliport medical transport in North America. “With this system, we cover 1 km2 of area in 6 minutes. If we did this search with a ground team, we would need 14 men and 7 hours of work. The time factor is what is most important when one is lost in the forest. In terms of efficiency, it is a considerable gain. We have been waiting a long time for a technology like this that has the power to save lives.”, Mr. Gaudron specified.
