Coats proudly from here

While the cold was hitting the cheeks and freezing the extremities at the end of the winter of 2022, local seamstresses were assembling the last pieces of fabric that would form our first winter coats made in Quebec in over two decades. A return to our roots that demonstrates the company's desire to return to its origins.

Inspired from here, created here

The two creations, a men's and a women's coat, have been named Chicoutimi and Saguenay, where the entire creation process took place, from design to conception. Inspired and created for our harsh climate, adapted for everyday use as well as for outings in our boreal forests, they will please all those who wear them.

" It is a very special project for the whole team. There was in this project the desire to create a product entirely made here in Quebec that could face the cold of its region of origin and proudly carry the locally made seal. " Claudie Laroche - Marketing Director for Chlorophylle

Projects like the Chicoutimi/Saguenay are always a source of pride. These are projects that can be complex to carry out in a situation where there is a shortage of manpower and a cruel lack of specialized seamstresses in the field, but this is what also motivated the team to surpass itself.

The creation

From the very beginning, it was essential to produce coats that were as beautiful, warm and efficient, if not more so, than those produced outdoors. This is the challenge that the entire team of creators and designers took up with flying colors. Our designers got to work in the spring of 2020 and as soon as the first drawings came out, there were discussions to validate the feasibility of the coats at the local level. In the next step, the person in charge of product development (fit & spec) worked very hard on the patterns so that the prototypes could be made by the seamstresses in the workshop.

At least three samples per style were sewn to ensure that everything was ready for production. What are we referring to? The materials to be ordered, usually a year in advance, the timeline (so that the materials would be ready at the same time as the production line of the team that was going to make the garment).

The production

When it came to choosing a partner to produce the coats, the choice was a natural one. Katie Bouchard, production manager for the past 20 years at Chlorophylle tells us: "We had already worked with Perséides 3D in the past and it was only natural to return to this company who always hires some of the seamstresses who had worked on our products in the past." She adds that many of the demanding sewing steps in the Chicoutimi and Saguenay coats required in-depth knowledge of the sewing process, so their help was invaluable. It was really a cooperative effort to develop more streamlined styles to avoid putting too much pressure on the assembly line, to work with the equipment on site, and also to reduce costs.

To produce the Chicoutimi and Saguenay coats required no less than 8,500 hours of work, excluding the creation process and the cutting of the fabrics. It is a colossal work but above all a great achievement for the Chlorophylle family.
